Solar Friendly Communities Program Launches

Colorado citizens should soon find it easier to go solar through a program launched today to streamline permitting for solar panel energy systems. The Solar Friendly Communities initiative will work in collaboration with cities and counties across the Front Range and Eastern Plains to cut red tape to make the process simpler for local governments, faster for solar installers and less expensive for citizens who want to use solar energy.
Solar a Favorite with Consumers, New Research Shows

Solar energy is the most popular of 13 clean energy technologies with 77% of respondents in a new national survey viewing it favorably and only 6% holding a negative opinion. The consumer survey of 1,000 U.S. adults, conducted by Pike Research, found that, “The high levels of favorable impressions across gender, income, education, and age segments suggest that solar energy enjoys widespread appeal from the mass market.’’ The survey results are summarized in a free white paper, which is available for download on Pike Research’s website.
COSEIA Wins National Policy Innovation Award

The Colorado Solar Energy Industries Association (COSEIA) this week won a prestigious national award for policy innovation for its work on a new state law governing solar permits. The Policy Innovation of the Year award from Renewable Energy World cited Colorado’s “Fair Permit Act’’ as a way to ease a bottleneck that was stifling solar development. The new law extends existing caps on solar permit fees and closes loopholes to create additional cost reductions. The Fair Permit Act HB-1199 was sponsored by Representative Bob Gardner and Senator Bob Bacon.
Solar Power Colorado to Launch Local Government Program

As hundreds of solar energy leaders and government officials head to Loveland later this week to attend Solar Power Colorado, the industry’s annual conference, they’ll be joining forces to battle an unlikely foe – soft costs. Permitting complexity, regulatory burdens, and other non-hardware costs, also known as “soft costs”, can increase the cost of going solar by up to 50%. This will be a major focus at this upcoming conference.
